It is important to start preparing for the arrival of your new baby not just for practical reasons but also emotionally and mentally. If this is your first child, getting the nursery ready may help you make the transition from being a couple to being parents. If you already have children, it is as important to get them involved in the preparations for the new baby. Helping set up a nursery or getting them to involved in shopping for baby products may help them come to terms that there will be a significant change in the family.
Baby Essentials Checklist - Here are some basic things that every new baby needs:

The Bassinet or Cot and Mattress - All cots currently sold in the UK should conform to BSEN716. This should mean that the cot is deep enough to be safe for your baby, that cot bars are less than 45-65 mm apart and the cot does not have cut-outs or steps. Check that the mattress and bumper pads fit snugly.
Bedding - Lightweight and heavyweight blankets, sleeping bag, fitted sheets, waterproof pads.
Baby Clothes - A good supply of baby clothes is needed as babies need to be changed regularly! Warm clothing for the colder months is essential including socks, hats, mittens and an all-in-one bodysuit or romper. Make sure all baby clothes especially sleepwear is flame-retardant.
Nappies - Whether you choose disposable or re-usable nappies, make sure you have an ample supply. If you choose to use re-usable nappies, buy liners, a nappy pail and disinfectant. Do not stock up on too many nappies as babies can outgrow them quickly. Baby wipes, cotton wool, nappy rash cream and baby powder are essential.
Changing Table - A changing table is useful as it places the baby at a comfortable height and keep all the changing items handy and within easy reach. Make sure that it has a comfortable restraining belt to keep your baby secure. Also, it should have a safety railing around the top. Never leave the baby unattended on the changing table even for a short time.
Baby Bathing - Infant Bathtub, Baby Sponge, Hooded Towels, Oils, Lotions, Shampoo

Feeding - Bottles, teats, bibs, steriliser, bottle warmer, bottle caps, teethers, breast pump, nursing pillow, nursing pads. A highchair and feeding spoons and bowls and other equipment for solid feeds will be needed at a later stage.

Travel - Car seat, pushchair, baby sling
Other equipment - Baby chair or rocker, baby monitor, thermometer, night light, safety gate, pacifier
How to set up a safe and happy nursery - Choose a theme, colour scheme or design that will last through childhoodIf possible, avoid carpets as babies tend to be messy! Use blackout curtains to ensure baby is not disturbed by light Make sure you have enough storage Make space for a comfortable armchair for yourself Secure wardrobes and bookshelves to walls to prevent them from falling Position the cot away from windows, heaters, lamps, wall decorations, cords, and furniture which can be used to climb out of the cot. Avoid curtains and blinds with cords If your cot is secondhand and painted, strip all paint and re-paint it with lead-free paint.
It thus pays to be vigilant when assessing any item intended for an infant, whether feeding, changing, furnishing,
baby clothing accessories or travel equipment.
